		<description>Landscape has a long tradition as muse. Its ability to inspire artists, writers, musicians and scientists equals that of many other creative catalysts. It is as much a concept as it is a painting, place or view. Landscape is now a manufactured part of human existence, becoming ever more difficult to find untouched geographies. With that acknowledgment, it becomes our responsibility to evaluate the way in which we touch and, in turn, affect our landscape. Out of this evolves the Middleland Project.

Middleland physically explores a series of “border states” in the central US along with the accompanying landscape for American identity. These are not your usual border states; semantically they are an amalgamation of the Heartland, the Midwest, the Bible Belt, just south of the Rust Belt and flanking the Mason-Dixon Divide. They provide a rich yet fractured history as ideologies are constantly challenged from the surrounding North and South. Every region has a dialect of visual adornment, exemplifying a particular region’s prevailing belief system. This distinctiveness is reflected in the landscape, monuments and memorials born of the core values and communities responsible for erecting them. My intention is to document this region’s distinctive identity through a series of photos, drawings, paintings and sculptures.

The Middleland itinerary travels an oblong oval through Kentucky, West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Kansas, Illinois and Indiana. The route favors state and local roads, avoiding freeways and other generic thoroughfares. The specific route and precise destinations are heavily outlined with flexibility designed into the 3,300 mile trek. As a studio artist currently exploring American iconography and nationalism, the objective is to seek regional clues to serve as subject(s) within the resulting artworks.

		<description>Soft Power is an on going series of drawings, photographs and sculptures that coincide with the Middleland Project. The initial Soft Power exhibit was hosted at Halcyon Contemporary Art Gallery in Terre Haute, IN in May of 2009. It gained its title from the internal references to nationalism, patriotism and current events through a use of flags, stars, fabrics, food and mushroom clouds.

With that acknowledgment, it becomes our responsibility to evaluate the way in which we touch and, in turn, affect our landscape. Out of this evolves the Middleland Project.

Middleland physically explores a series of “border states” in the central US along with the accompanying landscape for American identity. These are not your usual border states; semantically they are an amalgamation of the Heartland, the Midwest, the Bible Belt, just south of the Rust Belt and flanking the Mason-Dixon Divide. They provide a rich yet fractured history as ideologies are constantly challenged from the surrounding North and South. Every region has a dialect of visual adornment, exemplifying a particular region’s prevailing belief system. This distinctiveness is reflected in the landscape, monuments and memorials born of the core values and communities responsible for erecting them. My intention is to document this region’s distinctive identity through a series of photos, drawings, paintings and sculptures.

The Middleland itinerary travels an oblong oval through Kentucky, West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Kansas, Illinois and Indiana. The route favors state and local roads, avoiding freeways and other generic thoroughfares. The specific route and precise destinations are heavily outlined with flexibility designed into the 3,300 mile trek. As a studio artist currently exploring American iconography and nationalism, the objective is to seek regional clues to serve as subject(s) within the resulting artworks.

		<description>Drapes With Shoes To Match was my MFA thesis exhibition in The Surplus Gallery at Southern Illinois University Carbondale in May of 2005. The exhibit featured a range of sculptures and installations that referenced notions of home, childhood, ornamentation and a somewhat gaudy domestic iconography. The results are suggestive of furniture, Victorian motifs, pillows, and “woman’s work”.
